Buried Treasure In Las Cruces From The Las Cruces Home Team
Before banks and safety deposit boxes were an option, the rugged landscape of Las Cruces made hiding treasure ideal back in the “old days”. Believe it or not, there are several legends about buried treasure in and around Las Cruces. One of the most famous of those tales involves that of the Lost Padre Mine. Fact or fiction?… you be the judge.
Legend has it that Father LaRue was stationed in Chihuaha, New Mexico during the last years of the Spanish occupation. In 1797 Father LaRue listened intently as a dying soldier told him of a rich gold-bearing load located just one-days walk north of El Paso. The unnamed soldier then proceed to tell LaRue that in the first mountain range, there would be a basin with a spring at the foot of a solitary peak and upon this mountain was to be found a rich vein of gold.
Shortly after the unnamed soldier died, Father LaRue sent out on an expedition to retrieve the loot. LaRue assigned dozens of monks and Native Americans to mine the gold from the mountain. As luck would have, LaRue was able to extract gold from the land and stock pilled it deep in the San Andres Mountains slightly north of Las Cruces. Upon hearing of this news, the Spanish had commissioned the Mexican Army to locate LaRue, demanding he turn over the gold to Spain. The army was dispatched and caught Father LaRue. LaRue refused to tell the soldiers where the gold was located so he was tortured and later killed. The soldiers vigorously searched the entire area, but finding no clues, they returned to Mexico empty-handed.
Historical facts suggest that Father LaRue and his crew were residing in the Organ Mountains while his mining operation was deep in the San Andres Mountains just north of Las Cruces. It was here, according to the legend, that the treasure was concealed.
