Choosing To Thrive Vs Survive Amidst COVID 19
There's a huge difference between surviving and thriving. Survive means to “continue to live or exist, especially in spite of danger or hardship.” Thrive means to “prosper, be fortunate or successful, to grow or develop vigorously; flourish.” Where do you find yourself? Are you choosing to thrive or merely survive? Chances are you are somewhere in between. But here is the good news; you actually have the ability to choose one or the other! It just takes practice.
Most of us have put our lives on hold out of an abundance of caution and respect for guidelines being stated in efforts to help end the spread of the coronavirus. Not only have gatherings been canceled, but we’ve been stuck at home. Our patience is being tested, but here’s the thing: this is an opportunity to slow down and do the things we never get to do because we are so busy and distracted. So choose thrive over survive and faith over fear so we can find joy even amongst the unknown. Try out some of these ideas and see the drastic difference that they can make in your life:
Quality Time: Change the perspective from being “stuck” with your family, or yourself, to getting “unexpected bonus time.” Take the opportunity to play family games, watch movies, color and paint together. If you are living solo, or need more quiet/alone time, pick up that novel you pushed under your bed and tackle that beast once and for all. You can also rearrange your house and see what a difference it makes. You would be surprised what you can accomplish when you choose to put in the effort.
Organize: Now is the time! One drawer or cabinet at a time, start tackling those areas that you look at daily and they immediately make you feel grumpy or stressed. Start with something small so you will feel accomplished and then keep going from there. Just remember to ask your self questions like, “does it make me happy when I put a bowl away and 10 pieces of Tupperware fall on my head?” or “do I enjoy having to shove my socks in a drawer just to make room for one pair?” You can get organized if you choose to put in the effort.
Reach Out: Even though social distancing is a thing now, we are designed for relationships. This is when technology is a blessing. Call and reach out to those you love. Chances are they are hungry for conversation too. Also get creative and set up virtual gatherings, group facebook pages, and FaceTime or Skype. However you choose to stay connected, just make sure that you stay connected.
